New American Bible. The Revised Standard Version The need for an entirely new translation of the bible base on the best texts in the originial languages was realised in the latter part of the 19th Century. British scholars, in consultation with Americans, from 1870 to 1885 completed this monumental work and called it The Revised Version. American scholars came out with their editiion in 1901, calling it The American Standard Version. In 1936, the National Council of Churches commissioned a complete revision of the American Standard and it was published in 1952 as the Revised Standard Version. It has been continually revised ever since. It's motto remains, "As literal as possible, as free as necessary." In 1963, Cardinal Cushing of Boston gave the Oxford annotated edition of the Revised Standard Version a Catholic imprimatur. It is considered by far the best revision of the King James Version available by scholars. It has excellent introductions but little in the way of foot notes. .Now as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and broke it, and gave it to the disciples and said, "Take, eat; this is my body."And he took a cup, and when he had given thanks he gave it to them, saying, "Drink of it, all of you;
for this is my blood of the covenant, which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.
I tell you I shall not drink again of this fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom."
