CHRISTIAN FORMATION FOR
THE SINGLE LIFE

Susan Muto, Ph.D.

Being single in the world is a true vocation, a high and noble calling with problems and joys, crosses and crowns, just like any other lifestyle. It is a unique way of relating to God, the world and others. Here, Dr. Muto considers the challenges of living alone with God while being immersed in building up his kingdom on earth. She discusses fear and loneliness, inordinate attachments to people and things, the problem of workaholism, and more. Using insights from her book Celebrating the Single Life, she shows how Jesus is the model for the single person in the world and how his example is as relevant and exciting today as it was 2,000 years ago.

CONTEMPLATION, CONVERSION AND CREATIVITY

Bishop Robert F. Morneau

Contemplation is knowing. Conversion is answering, resisting, and committing. Creativity is experiencing, reflecting, responding and articulating. Drawing upon mystics, writers, theologians and his own broad experience, Bishop Morneau journeys to discover the foundation of ministry: ministry as leadership, community, worship, stewardship, education and prayer. A covenant grounded in truth, charity, freedom and justice, this journey is a painful process but rewarding as we become generative people, imaginative, full of memories, and fully alive.

MARY IN OUR SPIRITUAL LIFE TODAY

Fr. Fred Jelly, OP

For too long, devotion to Mary, like the doctrines about her, have not been integrated into the spiritual life and theology as a whole. Fr. Jelly, a Dominican Mariologist, has been seeking to show through his writings and tapes how we should contemplate the mysteries of Mary in the context of the central mysteries of our faith, the Trinity, the Incarnation and the Redemption as continued in the mission of Christ's Church. In these tapes of four half-hour lectures, he now strives to build upon this solid doctrinal foundation by explaining how true devotion to Mary is indispensable for our growth in the spiritual life.

Fr. Jelly's tape series gives a panoramic picture of spirituality and spiritual theology with a consideration of the Catholic conviction that a Marian spirituality is significant if we are to reach our full growth in Christ according to our calling as his faithful disciples. These tapes should be very useful to everyone and to all groups who wish to come closer to Christ through Mary.

C.S. LEWIS: MENTOR AND MODEL

Bishop Robert F. Morneau

C.S. Lewis (1898-1963) spent most of his life teaching at Cambridge University, but through his writings he has touched the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. Among his many enormously popular works are Mere Christianity and The Screwtape Letters. In these talks, Bishop Morneau focuses on two other works by C.S. Lewis: Surprised by Joy, an autobiographical account of his conversion to a living faith in Christ; and The Chronicles of Narnia, a multivolume fantasy and religious allegory about the adventures of a group of children in an enchanted world.

In his learned and witty style, well known to those who have enjoyed his previous audiocassette series for Alba House Communications, Bishop Morneau shows how the stories of C.S. Lewis can shape our emotions, guide and direct our energies, and provide meaning for our journey through life.

GREGORIAN CHANT: ANCIENT PLAINSONG

For Advent and Christmas

As the euphoria of a few decades ago diminishes and it becomes clear that all that glitters in the Church music field is not gold, there is taking shape an inevitable return to the music which has stood the test of time and increased the devotion of millions of worshipers. And there is even more. The ancient melodies are resounding impressively on the lips on non-Europeans. Inculturation is a priority for today's Church and here is a fine example of how it can be done in the musical sphere. THE HOLY SPIRIT HOVERS  OVER THE UNIVERSE

George Maloney, SJ

Father George Maloney outdoes himself in this dynamic presentation of the person and activity of the Holy Spirit. He guides the believer through the mystery and revelation of the Holy Spirit, who broods over the chaos and who overshadowed the Blessed Virgin Mary and the Apostles. The Spirit still hovers over the created world and dwells in the Church and in every human being.

We are "divinized" by the Holy Spirit who makes us truly Children of God. The Spirit is the sanctifying power that makes us holy, for he is love by his very being. Since Holiness is the total giving in the Spirit, we can measure our holiness by asking ourselves how we love. We don't have to be anyone else but our true selves in Jesus and in the Father. NORMS FOR JUDGING APPARITIONS
AND PRIVATE REVELATIONS

Fr. Fred Jelly, OP

Recently visions, apparitions and private revelations have multiplied, capturing people's imaginations and hearts. To a great degree they have also affected patterns of spirituality and belief. Christianity is a revelation-based religion has always left room for the presence and experience of the supernatural through visions, apparitions, and revelations.

Fr. Fred Jelly is a noted Dominican Theologian and Mariologist, with hands-on experience in studying and evaluating visions for the Church. In this program he clarifies these very key concepts: apparition; visionaries; charismatic and sanctifying grace; corporeal, imaginary and intellectual apparitions; public and private revelation; and the supernatural as miraculous and holy. To give this subject a very practical bent, Fr. Jelly applies these criteria and processes to a few very well known, present-day apparitions. He approaches the visionary, the vision itself, and the people affected by them in a very pastoral manner.

PRAYER:
LEARNING THE GOD LANGUAGE

Maureen Schuler, PsyD

Prayer is a communication within a relationship. It is therefore guided by a number of spiritual, psychological and emotional aspects that affect any relationship. Personality certainly affects our relationship with God. Our relationship with God and God's relationship with us are present every single day of our lives. It is a relationship that is much longer and deeper than our relationship with our parents, spouse or any other human being.

Our notion of God and our manner of relating to God are ideas and ways of acting that we have learned. God has a plan for each and every person. God calls us to a homeotasis - a balance which we can achieve if we put ourselves in contact with God. I have to find out what God wants from me. Often God touches us through other people. readings, events, and yes, even failure, pain and misery.

In this three cassette program Dr. Maureen Schuler, a Jungian Psychologist, will help you to look into a wide variety of situations and happenings through which God speaks to you. You will learn how to really listen. God, you know, always listens and wants you to pray, because you were created by God for a unique and special relationship.

Learn how God keeps upsetting us until we finally find him, and how God's response to us is not always a pat on the back.

Learn also how to listen to God who has important messages for you in your unconscious, in your shadow, in others, and in events of your life.

Excellent for anyone trying to develop a realistic relationship with God who calls us into balance. Soothing for those trying to understand the hard things of life.

QUESTIONS AT THE FOOT OF THE CROSS

Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, CFR

Fr. Groeschel uniquely approaches the Good Friday commemoration by looking at some of the questions that were asked not only by Jesus, but by others caught up in the horrible experience of the Passion. There are questions that we as human beings need to ask, as well as questions that are frequently asked of us by God, by Christ, by the Church, and by the events of our lives. In a sense Judas asks for us, Is it I, Lord? Am I grateful to the Lord or am I quite cavalier about dismissing God? Comparisons between Veronica and Judas and Mary Magdalene and Judas bring home the nature of our own gratitude and our own betrayals. The answer to Good Friday is Easter. We can't celebrate the Resurrection, however, without first dealing personally with the crucifixion and death of Jesus and our own sinfulness. This gives the answer to the final question: Why are you seeking the living among the dead?

Perfect reflection material for Lent and Good Friday.

To Know Jesus Christ and Him Crucified

Sr. Carolyn Osiek, RSCJ

This superb Lenten reflection opens to women and men alike those thoughts on the death and resurrection of Christ that so influenced and moulded St. Paul in his personal life and ministry.

God revealed Jesus to Paul in a very personal way which culminated in his conversion. Paul came to know the person of Christ who was crucified, died and raised to new life.

Paul empties himself as Jesus did. He imitates Christ in every facet of his life. For Paul, all is considered as loss compared to Jesus Christ. Sr. Carolyn shows how St. Paul's portrayal of "Christ Crucified" is a portrayal of a reversal of values, a real conversion; and how we are called to identify with the full humanity of Christ.

To identify with Christ is to conform our life to the fully human and mortal Christ. Our life is to reflect the pattern of Jesus' life - which calls us into conformity with the living and dying of Jesus without shrinking from the cross. This means that we are called to enter the mystery of the scandal of the cross - that is to enter our full humanity and mortality, and to accept our weakness and strength.

Paul connects Baptism, death and freedom from sin. As we enter a new life with Jesus through his death and resurrection

(Baptism) we are called to a life in which there is no sin. The Christian is the one who carries in the "self" the dying and rising of Christ. We are called to live our lives as to reproduce the pattern of Jesus' life, thereby becoming the expression of Christ living in the world. St. Paul allowed his life to be shaped by the symbols of the cross and resurrection. We are asked to reflect on how Baptism into the death and resurrection of Christ has really shaped our lives.

We are called into the resurrection to dwell on and be aware of that level of existence and consciousness in our earthly life that chooses the best - Christ's way. We are called also to

fight against those elements that set us against God's will.

Sr. Osiek tells us that there is a difference between immortality and Resurrection. Immortality tells us that life goes on - Resurrection tells us that life is changed. The celebration of Easter tells us that life is changed into new life.

Excellent Lenten listening. Very useful for reflection and meditation time. Very useful for preparing Lenten talks. Sr. Carolyn Osiek at her best.

OUR FATHER: OUR PRAYER OF LOVE

Fr. Clyde A. Bonar

St. Thomas Aquinas called the Our Father one of the world's greatest prayers. It was taught to the apostles by Jesus Christ himself. It is referred to by modern theologians as the perfect prayer. We pray it at every Eucharistic celebration. But even in its familiarity many may have lost the central message of the Our Father. It is a prayer of love. It tells us how much God loves us and it tells us to ask for and expect that love and to share it with our neighbors. In it we are to petition God for protection from what is not love.

Rev. Clyde Bonar discusses these themes of God's love in depth as revealed to us in the Our Father. Originally delivered as a retreat for priests, Fr. Bonar's insights are valid for all Christians today. Jesus called the Father "Abba" - daddy. Addressing God as Abba is like a child hugging its father. It implies a closeness found only within family. When we understand the love that is within the Our Father we are closer to understanding our relationship with God and the family that is our neighbors.

Fr. Bonar reflects upon each phrase of the great prayer called the Our Father, drawing forth new meaning and relevance in light of the call to the Christian to be the child of God, the loving neighbor, and the brother or sister to all men and women. He reveals a true understanding of forgiveness and the importance of being a forgiving people. The impact of sin on the life of the Christian is explained, and living the "Sacrament of the Present Moment" is explored.

Through this audio cassette series you can learn to "hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good" as the words of St. Paul tell us. Discover the love of God working in your life as you uncover the deeper meaning of the great prayer the Our Father.

UNDERSTANDING AND GUIDING
TEENAGE SPIRITUALITY

Sr. Carole Riley, CDP, PhD.

Anyone in the position of interacting with teenagers, from the arenas of teaching, counselling, therapy, or parish ministry, appreciates the intricacies of adolescent behavior. The need to understand the spirituality of teenagers is a real concern to those who choose to make a difference in the lives of today's adolescents.

Sr. Carole makes a detailed and systematic study of the complex workings of teenage spirituality in this enlightening and informative audio-cassette presentation. She escorts us through the developmental tasks of the adolescent, demonstrating how the teen must cultivate independence through separation from family, be responsible, integrate sexuality and emerge as a separate, independent person with fully developed identity and values. During this crucial period of growth and personal identity development, the teen begins to discover a sense of self in relation to God. Sr. Carole illustrates how to guide young people through the troubled waters of this age and come to grips with an identity as a reflection of God's love.

CRITICAL RESPONSE TO PRIVATE REVELATION

Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, CFR

The incidence of private revelation in today's world has become prosaic enough that it affects the lives of everyone to a certain extent. When considering reported occurrences of divine manifestation, concern must be exercised in making judgements and proffering opinions. Critical response to private revelation is a difficult subject requiring wisdom, devotion, and faith.

In this provocative and informative discussion, Fr. Groeschel unveils some of the mystery and apprehension shrouding the interpretation of private revelation. He discusses the various forms that these manifestations may take, then leads us through an exposition of the steps that are followed when private revelation is investigated by a Bishop's committee. He concludes with an inventory of important points to be considered in examining reports of private revelation, and a list of appropriate action.

Crucial pastoral information for priests or other clergy who may be in a position to receive reports of private revelation, or for anyone who wishes to reach informed conclusions in light of faith and Church teachings.

FAITH AND POETRY-
THE IMPORTANCE OF RELIGIOUS IMAGINATION

Bishop Robert F. Morneau

In this revealing and provocative presentation, Rev. Morneau directs the listener to an in-depth comprehension of how images, attitudes, and behavior are interrelated factors of human wholeness. The elements of human behavior are rooted within our attitudes - how we behold the world around us. These attitudes are shaped by our perception of the images that bombard us throughout our lives. Since images have such an instrumental effect on the development of behavior, it is crucial that the images we receive communicate wholesome ideals, a difficult accomplishment in today's world.

Rev. Morneau shows how imagination allows us to live with freshness and vitality, how through the use of the images found in poetry we can develop our faith, shape our attitudes and form standards of behavior that communicate Gospel values. His reflective discussion is peppered with citations from the works of several notable writers - Gerard Manley Hopkins, Robert Frost, George Herbert and Thomas Merton, to name but a few. A thoroughly delightful audio-cassette program.

POETRY IN QUEST OF GOD

Bishop Robert F. Morneau

The spiritual life requires of a person a searching, an examination and an ultimate way of expressing how God is working within the soul. It is the word of God that inclines our thoughts, colors our judgements, and is the source of our inspirations. In this reflective, three-part series delivered as a conference for priests, Rev. Morneau examines how poetry serves to direct our thoughts toward the divine, and allows us to develop alternate ways of seeing, knowing and relating in terms of the spirit presence within. He considers the affinities of poetry and spirituality - truth, goodness, beauty, the search for union and unity. Many notable authors are quoted, using examples of their works, to lead the listener to discover the intersection of spirituality and poetry found at the crossroads of these transcendentals.

Part 1: Spirituality and Poetry
Part 2: Preaching and Poetry
Part 3: Life and Poetry

Magnificently evocative material for anyone wishing to discover and cultivate a fresh approach to the gifts of the spirit through the radiance of the imagination.

DISCIPLINE OF RENEWAL:
THE EXAMINATION OF CONSCIENCE

Fr. George Maloney, S.J.

In this tranquil and meditative presentation, Fr. Maloney takes a fresh look at the time honored spiritual exercise known as the examination of conscience. Derived from well-known Western foundations and flavored with Eastern spirituality, he gives us a new technology for achieving closer union with God by transcending the barriers of our personal natures. Searching for God in our lives is actually the quest to understand his will for us, and to know the will of God requires that we break through the emotional boundaries that separate us from his graces. A thorough examination of conscience does more for us that just allowing us to recognize our faults- it lets us discover God working in our lives in the person of Christ.

Fr. Maloney gives us a step-by-step technology that will enable us to cleanse ourselves of false ego and get in touch with the motivations behind our feelings and actions. Then we will be able to achieve the freedom to find God and to recognize Christ in our lives and in all of creation.

ENCOUNTER IN THE SPIRIT:
THE JESUS PRAYER

Fr. George Maloney, S.J.

Lord Jesus Christ, son of the living God, have mercy on me a sinner. Simple words, yet abundantly fertile with the lifeblood of the Holy Spirit. The Jesus Prayer, properly understood, can become more than a pious exercise - it can be a way of life leading one to a truly charismatic experience formed in the presence of the Spirit.

Fr. Maloney explores the Jesus Prayer in depth, focusing on its roots in the young Church and through the developing spirituality of the early Christian community. We see how it is the perfect prayer, containing the three elements of transcendence, sense of sin, and imminence. These are the rudiments of the prayer which lead to a deeper union with God, the ability to be self-giving and to die and rise with Christ in holiness. Concluding with a brief guided meditation, this audio-cassette program is wonderful material for developing the Spirit in our lives.

THE EXPERIENCE OF CHRIST

Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, CFR

All experiences of Christ are personal and unique, yet they involve the same object - the Second Person of the Blessed Trinity, Jesus Christ. Accepting the beliefs of Christianity places one within the boundaries of the experience of Christ as the Son of the Father. The interpretation of this experience has parameters within which one lives his faith. Fr. Groeschel addresses what it means to experience Christ with faith, and how that experience is defined by cultural and other factors. He shows us that the Church has never been totally uniform, therefore it would be wrong to simply long for the "old days." We must be ready to encourage the diversity of experience that welcomes all.
