"The believer who has seriously pondered his Christian vocation, including what Revelation has to say about the possibility of martyrdom, cannot exclude it from his own life's horizon," Pope John Paul II writes. Martyrdom is always a great and radical test for any human being, the proof of his or her dignity before God and the world. In this test, the victory is won be the power of grace that comes through faith. One might be inclined to think that such heroism is the lot of very few. But does not a mother find herself before a similar test when she chooses to sacrifice herself in order to save the life of her child? Does not a believer find himself before a test of this sort when he defends the right to religious freedom and freedom of conscience? Any total gift of self, like martyrdom itself, is a mystery that leaves human reason beguiled. This book sensitively and beautifully explores the various aspects of this mystery which so beguiles our reason.

Michele T. Gallagher, Ph.D. earned her doctorate in English from St. John's University in New York where she later held the position of Associate Professor of English. She has also taught at CUNY, Brooklyn College and Iona College. Her knowledge and appreciation of poetry, literature, patrology, Scripture and liturgy are evident in the insights of this present work. Earlier Alba House publications include: Honey From the Rock (1991), Sound the Trumpet (1993), and Breath and Bread (1998). Her desire in this work is to offer hope to all those who, by making a total gift of themselves in the service of Christ and others, find themselves suffering for the sake of the kingdom of God on earth.

Reviews

"Reason is Beguiled: On the Mystery of Martyrdom and of Total Self-Gift is written by Michele T. Gallagher with a poet's sensibilities and sensitivities. The author, an English professor, employs scripture, poetry and the writings of the Fathers in her exploration. This book is a find and will surely provoke meditation, joy and wonder." --Fr. William C. Graham in National Catholic Reporter "Bookshelf", September 1, 2000
