San Giovanni Rotondo was once only a quiet, remote Italian village. But today, for countless millions, this town has become a spiritual mecca, radiating a renown comparable to that of Assisi and at times bustling with a pilgrimage-like atmosphere not unlike that of Fatima or Lourdes. The reason: one edifying citizen, Padre Pio, a Capuchin priest who, from 1918 until his death in 1968, bore the stigmata, the wounds of Christ in his flesh. Miracles attributed to him have given rise to the hope that, following his beatification in May 1999, he will soon be canonized a saint. This is his story.

Dorothy Gaudiose, a graduate of Lock Haven State College in Pennsylvania where she majored in education and language, has traveled extensively throughout the United States, Europe, Africa and Asia. She did graduate work at the Sorbonne in Paris and first met Padre Pio in 1950 when she immediately became intrigued by the charismatic personality of this great man. In 1993, after the success of the present work was well established (it is now in its 13th printing), she wrote Mary's House (Alba House), the biography of one of Padre Pio's most loyal American disciples, Mary Pyle (a Rockefeller by birth).

Reviews

"Padre Pio's story is told here by an obviously devoted admirer who drew from years of on-the-scene observations. The basic outlines of the tireless confessore who bore the wounds of the Crucified are quite well-known, but the author uses the great amount of details available to narrate a very readable and moving account of his life -- from boyhood to his death in 1968 at the age of 81." --Spiritual Book News
