Intended for everyone who would like to become better acquainted with the passages of Scripture that are read at Mass each week -- and not merely the homilist in search of ideas for his next sermon -- this collection of homilies represents the fruit of thirty years of preaching each Sunday in parishes to people from very different social, racial, and educational backgrounds, many of whom have claimed to have enjoyed and profited from them. Since nothing could contribute more effectively to a fuller and more fruitful participation in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass than the enlightened participation of the parishioners, it is the author's hope that these homilies will help people to understand the Scripture readings better, appreciate them more, and read the Word of God more frequently on their own.

Edward T. Dowling, S.J. received his Masterof Divinity degree from Woodstock College and was ordained in 1969. He has spent the past thirty years preaching each week in various parishes in the New York and Rockville Center dioceses. He holds a Ph.D. in Economics from Cornell University and is currently Professor of Economics at Fordham University. In his twenty-seven years at Fordham he has served three terms as Chairman of the Economics Department and one term as Dean of Fordham College. His previous publications have all been in Mathematical Economics and Statistics.

Reviews

"Dowling, who teaches economics at Fordham University, offers the reader the fruits of his many years of preaching on the Sunday Gospels from the A Cycle of the Lectionary. Claiming no particular expertise in biblical scholarship and no other license than that of a hardworking Sunday priest and homilist, Dowling's work is down-to-earth and sound as he wrestles with the biblical message and tries to bring it home to his audience. Those who are looking for inspiration and good ideas for their Sunday homily will appreciate these solid materials." -- Donald Senior, CP in The Bible Today, November/ December 2001

"Gospel reflections: Perfect for the homilist, Have Your Heard the Good News? Reflections on the Sunday Gospels, Cycle A will also be a great help for anyone interested in going deeper into the Gospel each week. Priests will appreciate the beginning apology from author Edward T. Dowling, SJ for his difficulty in remembering all the source material from the thirty years of homily writing that went into this book. For each Sunday, the author writes clearly about the images and scenes cited, then relates them to modern ideas and issues. Handy to have on your desk for reading anytime, not only for sermon preparation." --Crux of the News, December 10, 2001
