"The Rosary has been the window through which the two-edged sword of the Word of God has been able to gain access to my soul," the author states in his Introduction to these brief and at the same time profound reflections on the mysteries in the life of Jesus. "I discovered," he goes on to say, "that the Rosary wasn't about Mary -- she would have hated us to concentrate on her -- but about her Son. Jesus became a real human being in Mary's womb; ... He could feel everything that we feel, suffer everything that we suffer. he got dirty, cut Himself, felt tired, just as we do. And, if we forget this, then we have failed to understand the whole point of the Incarnation." .... "Reading Richard's moving reflections on these mysteries in the life of Jesus, one begins to understand how the Rosary can be a truly biblical prayer and a simple and direct way of penetrating into the heart of Christ and the Gospel." (Raniero Cantalamessa, OFM Cap, in the Preface)

Richard Hobbs (1933-1993) is remembered by his friends and business colleagues as a tall, humble man with a gift for speaking his mind clearly and with authority; by his family as a loving husband and father of six sons and several grandchildren; and by the charismatic prayer group in which he exercised a prophetic ministry as a convert to Catholicism who was used by the Lord to powerfully and unambiguously proclaim the Gospel message to the men and women of our time. Other works published in England following his death include a booklet entitled The Desire of My Heart (words on Jesus' desire for unity among all His followers) and a beautiful Via Crucis called "A More Perfect Way," which has been suggested as a possible text to be used by the Pope for the Stations of the Cross in the Colosseum on Good Friday.

Reviews

"Life reflections: Written following the form of the Rosary, Fifteen Mysteries in the Life of Jesus: Reflections by Richard Hobbs brings spiritual seekers through the joyful, sorrowful and glorious mysteries with heartfelt wonder and praise. As a jumping off point for Bible study classes, or for personal reflection, these explorations delve into the mysteries with the faith of a child and the maturity of a wise sage. Written as if Jesus were talking to the reader, the effect is powerful and personal. From the first glorious mystery: "It is not enough / to be born in the flesh; / each one of you / must be born again from above / as I was. / I invite each one of you / to follow me, and come to my father's table." Clear, moving writing makes this good for personal or group reflection, or for contemplation during exposition." --Crux of the News, October 28, 2002
