At the Annunciation, the Angel Gabriel announced to Mary that she was to give birth to a son whom she was to name Jesus for he would save his people from their sins. "He will be great," the angel told her, "and will be called Son of the Most High." Then he went on to promise that God would give him the throne of his father David, that he would reign over the house of Jacob forever, and that his Kingdom would have no end. The problem for Mary, throughout her life and especially as she stood at the foot of the cross, was that most of these things did not seem to be coming true. And still she remained steadfast in her faith. All generations since then have called her blessed because, as Elizabeth said to her, she believed that the Lord's words to her would come true. Like us, Mary had to struggle and to trust and, in the process, grow in wisdom and grace. This book shows us how we can imitate her in her faith.

Reviews

"Mary's Faith: Taken from the Second Vatican council and the writings of Pope Paul VI and Pope John Paul II, Mary's continuing role as a model of strength in character and faith is explored in The Faith of Mary: Vatican II Insights on the Humanity of Mary. Scholarly in tone, the book by Antoine E. Nachef explains the beginnings of Marian devotion, and how her strength of character and faith helped to sustain her when it seemed like God's promise wouldn't be realized as she stood at the foot of the cross. And yet, she believed. Each of the documents takes a different look at the Mother of God, and each is explored for deeper meaning of how her deep conviction sustained her through the difficult times. Comes with a 16-page bibliography and is well-footnoted." --Crux of the News, November 18, 2002

"Nachef is well-qualified to write about his chosen subject having been educated internationally at excellent institutions of higher learning. He is also the author of several other books on Mary and recent theological developments. This book looks at Mary as the perfect model for all who lead lives that are "pilgrimages of faith." Nachef does this by looking at recent theology to make Mary's faith more applicable to our modern lives. Chapter one looks at the discussions and resultant documents of the Second Vatican Council, particularly Lumen Gentium to see how the Council Fathers treated Mary from a dogmatic, pastoral and ecumenical point of reference. Chapter two is titled "Pope Paul VI: Mary the perfect realization of human existence." This is a commentary on the Pope's Apostolic Exhortation, Marialis Cultus. In this document, Paul VI faithfully reflects on the Church's traditional theology and reaches the modern mentality of his contemporaries. Catholics today are all very aware of the current Pope's devotion to Mary. His Mariology has been expressed in countless documents and seen in his private devotion and prayer life. Indeed, Nachef has written an entire book on John Paul II and Mary. Chapter three of the present book somewhat condenses and brings together the essential elements of the Pope's thinking about Mary. Redemptoris Mater is analyzed and commented on to give a good understanding to the reader. This is an excellent book on recent mariological developments. It is written with knowledge and many insights are offered. The bibliography is broad and extensive. The work is a good addition to library shelves and it will also be enjoyed by many to further deepen their love and devotion to Our Blessed Mother." --Arnold Rzepecki in Catholic Library World
