As in his earlier work, Newman for Everyone (Alba House, 1996), Fr. Brady introduces us in a very novel way to the thought of another of the most creative thinkers in the history of the Church, St. Augustine of Hippo. The 101 questions presented here cover a broad spectrum of ideas on the nature of God, evil, the self, teaching, death, heaven, the use of creatures, sin, grace, happiness, faith, love, peace, wisdom, prayer, the Mass and Christ. This little book, exemplifying how Augustine expressed Christ's appeal to everyone has three purposes: to provide subjects for daily meditation, to encourage the reader to read the great works of St. Augustine, especially his Confessions and the City of God, and to provide a handy resource for the preparation of a homily or talk in which one may want to quote the faith-filled insights of this great saint.

The author of An Augustine Treasury, A Philosopher's Search for the Infinite, An Aquinas Treasury, Inferring God's Existence: Anselm, Aquinas and Kant and Newman for Everyone (ST PAULS Alba House, 1996), Jules M. Brady, S.J. has lectured widely in the United States, England, Canada, and Russia. Having just recently retired from teaching at Rockhurst College in Kansas City, he presently resides with the Jesuit Community at St. Louis University in St. Louis, Missouri. This is his second book for ST PAULS.

Reviews

"Brady presents 101 questions on topics such as the nature of God, evil, the self, happiness, and wisdom. He provides answers from the writings of Augustine of Hippo." --Clare Boehmer, ASC in Review for Religious, January 2003

"Answers from Augustine: Covering questions from knowing that God is Love to not being afraid of death, St. Augustine wrote volumes of answers for the people of Hippo and beyond. In Augustine for Everyone: 101 Questions Answered Imaginatively by Augustine, the wisdom of one of the Church's most brilliant minds shines through clearly. In 17 chapters on a variety of subjects like Evil, Happiness, Peace, Prayer and Mass, editor Fr. Jules M. Brady, S.J., translates the writings and applies them to questions such as, Q: Why should I avoid the smallest sin? A: Bits of grain accumulated make up a mass of grain; the smallest drops develop into a river. Therefore I should avoid the smallest daily sins (Augustine, on Psalm 94:5). Both for personal and professional use, this book clarifies and distills the ideas of the Bishop of Hippo for prayer, use in homilies or just to deepen understanding." --Crux of the News, October 14,2002
